January 10th, 2018 | Posted by in Uncategorized - (Comments Off on Vehicle traffic counting with UWB radar sensor)Our UWB radar sensor was succesfully used to count vehicles and monitor traffic intensity on public road. The test place was two lane, two-way road, and radar was able to detect vehicles separetaly in both lanes, thus acquiring information about both traffic directions.
The radar sensor was placed besides the road about 4 meters away, and 3m above the ground with maximal range of 11m. Power supply and data comunications is carried out by PoE.
Such sensor has a few advantages over conventional technologies (Cameras, PIR sensors, Ultrasonic)
- Much less dependant of weather conditions (rain, snow, etc.)
- Lighting does not affect radars performance
- Easier data processing (no need for image processing)
- High refresh rate (>70 scans per second)
- Precision (Sensors resolution >0.5cm )
- Easy installation (needs access to PoE)
The UWB radar is enclosed in waterproof case with waterproof industrial ethernet connector.
In given example, the data are shown in two histograms. First one shows vehicle count by hour separetaly by lanes, second shows daily traffic.
Obtained data are timestamps of vehicles in both lines. They can be represented in many ways, also used in real time as event notice(switch lights on/off, alarm, etc.).
